Opening ALL Attachments with the Outlook E-mail Security Update and Outlook 2002:

Outlook 2002 allows the user to use a registry key to open up access to blocked attachments.
To use this key:
- Run Regedit, and go to this key:
  - HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\10.0\Outlook\Security
- Under that key, add a new string value named Level1Remove.
- For the value for Level1Remove, enter a semicolon-delimited list of file extensions.
  - For example, entering this:
    .mdb; .url; .swf
    would unblock Microsoft Access files and Internet shortcuts.
- If you are using this registry entry, a glance at Help / About Microsoft Outlook will show Security Mode: User Controlled above the license information.

Cannot Open Attachments in Outlook 2003

Quit Outlook 2003.
Click Start
Click Run.
In the Open box, type regedit
Click OK.
Verify if the following registry key exists. If it does, continue.
If the registry key does not exist, create it. To create the registry key, open the register editor and locate and then click the following registry key:
- Click the Edit menu
- Click New
- Click String Value.
- Type the following name for the new value:
- Press Enter.
- Right-click the new string value name
- Click Modify.
- Type the file name extension of the file type that you want to open in Outlook 2003.
  - For example:
  - To specify multiple file types, use the following format:
  - Click OK.
  - Quit Registry Editor.
  - Restart your computer.
- When you start Outlook 2003, you can open the file types that you specified in the registry.
Attachment Behavior
- Attachments are divided into three groups based on their file name extension or type. Outlook 2003 handles each group in a specific way.

Level 1 ("Unsafe")

The "unsafe" category represents any file name extension that may have script or code associated with it. You cannot open any attachment with an "unsafe" file name extension. The following list contains attachments that are considered unsafe:

The following list describes how Outlook 2003 behaves when you receive or send an "unsafe" file attachment:
- Any "unsafe" attachment is not accessible. You cannot save, delete, open, print, or otherwise work with "unsafe" files. The top of the E-mail message indicates that Outlook 2003 has blocked access to the "unsafe" attachment. The attachment is not accessible from Outlook 2003. However, the attachment is not actually removed from the E-mail message.
- If you forward an E-mail message with an "unsafe" attachment, the attachment is not included in the forwarded E-mail message.
- If you send an E-mail message that contains an "unsafe" attachment, you receive a warning message that says other Outlook recipients may not be able to access the attachment that you are trying to send. You can either ignore the warning message and send the E-mail message, or you can choose not to send the E-mail message.
- If you save or close an E-mail message that contains an "unsafe" attachment, you receive a warning message that says that you will not be able to open the attachment in Outlook 2003. You can override the warning message and save the E-mail message.
- You cannot open objects that are inserted in Microsoft Outlook Rich Text E-mail messages by using the Insert Object command. You do see a visual representation of the object, but you cannot open or activate the object in the E-mail message.
- You cannot open "unsafe" files that have been directly stored in an Outlook or an Exchange folder. Although these files are not attached to an Outlook item, they are still considered "unsafe." You receive the following error message in this situation:
- Can't open the item. Outlook blocked access to this potentially unsafe item.
Level 2
- Level 2 files are not "unsafe," but they do require more security than other attachments. When you receive a Level 2 attachment, you are prompted to save the attachment to a disk and you cannot open the attachment in the E-mail message. By default, file name extensions are not associated with this group. However, you can add file name extensions to the Level 2 list.
- Note You can only change the list of files that are included in the Level 2 category if you are using Outlook 2003 in an Exchange environment and if your mail is being delivered to an Exchange mailbox. An administrator must make these changes.
Other Attachments
- When you try to open an attachment other than those in the "unsafe" or the Level 2 lists, you are prompted to either open the file directly or to save it to a disk. When you are prompted, you have the option to turn off future prompts for that file name extension if you click to clear the Always ask before opening this type of file check box.
- Note If a program associates itself with a new file name extension, that file name extension is treated as an "other" attachment until you add the file name extension to the "unsafe" list. For example, if you install a program on your computer that uses files with a .xyz file name extension, whenever you open an attachment that has a .xyz file name extension, the new program opens and runs the attachment. By default, the .xyz file name extension is not on the "unsafe" or the Level 2 list. Therefore, it is treated as an "other" file name extension. If you want attachments with the .xyz file name extension to be treated as "unsafe," you must add the .xyz file name extension to the list of "unsafe" file name extensions.

Error Message When You Import a Personal Address Book File

Error Message
- When you try to import a Personal Address Book, you may receive the following error message:
  - An error occurred while importing or exporting and the import/export was terminated.
  - MAPI error 0X80004005 was reported. Please try to import/export later.
Solution
- Move the address book file you are trying to import to the hard drive if it is on a CD or other write protected drive.
  - You need to move the file to an area where you can change the attributes from "Read Only"
- Right click on the file and remove the tic from Read only
- Try importing again, this time it should work.

You receive a "can't contact LDAP Directory server (81)" error message when you open the Address Book in Outlook

Solution
- If you are not using Internet directory services (LDAP), remove the LDAP address book. To do so:
  - Start Outlook (if it is not already started).
  - On the Tools menu, click E-mail Accounts.
  - Under Directory, click View or change existing directories or address books, and then click Next.
  - Under Directories and Address Books box, click the LDAP address book that you want to remove, and then click Remove.
  - Click Finish.
  - Quit, and then restart Outlook.
- If you are using Internet directory services (LDAP), make sure that the settings for the LDAP address book are configured correctly. To do so:
  - Start Outlook (if it is not already started).
  - On the Tools menu, click E-mail Accounts.
  - Under Directory, click View or change existing directories or address books, and then click Next.
  - Under Directories and Address Books box, click the LDAP address book that you want to configure, and then click Change.
  - Verify that the settings for the LDAP server are correct.
  - Click Next, and then click Finish.

Error Messages When You Search the Address Book by Using a Full User Name

- If you type a full user name in the Display Name field in the Find dialog box of your address book when you try to search a Lightweight Directory Access Protocol (LDAP) server in Outlook 2002, you may receive the following error messages:
  - Unable to display results because too many entries in the Internet Directory match your search criteria.
  AND
  - The search could not be completed. MAPI_E_CALL_FAILED.
  AND
  - Cannot contact the LDAP server (81) error.
Solution
- Download the latest Office XP Service Pack
- Registry Change That Are Required to Activate the Fix
  - Warning: If you use Registry Editor incorrectly, you may cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system. Back up the registry before you do anything else.
    - Click Start, and then click Run.
    - In the Open box, type regedit.exe, and then click OK.
    - Locate and then click the following key in the registry:
    - On the Edit menu, point to New, and then click DWORD Value to add and set the following value:
      - Value name: NoDisplayNameSearch
      - Data type: DWORD
        Value data: 1
    - Close Registry Editor.

Error Messages When You Delete a Large Number of Messages

- To work around this problem, delete fewer than 4,000 messages in a single operation.

"Unable to display the folder" or "Unable to expand the folder" error message when you use Outlook to access your mailbox in Exchange 2000 Server or in Exchange Server 2003

- Point to either Search or Find
- click Files or Folders
- Find and rename the following files:
  - Pstprx32.dll to Pstprx32.old
  - Outlph.dll to Outlph.old
  - Outlcm.dll to Outlcm.old
- Click Start
- Click Run.
- In the Open box, type regedit.
- Locate the following keys for your operating system: For Microsoft Windows NT and Microsoft Windows 2K
  - HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Windows Messaging Subsystem\Profiles\{current profile}\
- For Microsoft Windows 9x and Microsoft Windows Millennium Edition (Me):
  - HKEY_USERS\.DEFAULT\Software\Microsoft\Windows Messaging Subsystem\Profiles\{current profile}\
- After you locate the registry keys, export and delete the reference to the Hotmail personal folders (PST) file or the Hotmail account settings.
- Close all Microsoft Office programs (except for Outlook) that you are currently running, and verify that all anti-virus utilities are disabled.
- Run Detect and Repair from the Outlook Help menu, and verify that both the restore my shortcuts while repairing and discard my customized settings and restore default settings options are in the repair menu.
- Reboot the computer, and then restart Outlook. You will receive a prompt to set up the E-mail accounts.

You Cannot Connect to Your MSN Account in Outlook 2003

- Start Internet Explorer.
- On the Tools menu, click Internet Options.

- Click Allow.
- In the Address of Web site box, type msn.com
- Click Allow.
- Click OK two times.

You Receive an Error Message When You Try to Create an E-mail Account in Outlook 2003

- Your mail is set to be delivered to a location other than the Exchange account that you are creating. If you do not change this setting, your Exchange server mail will be removed from the Exchange server and delivered to the current delivery location. Do you want to change the delivery location for all of your messages to your new Exchange account?
- If you click Yes in the message, you receive the following error message:
  - There was an error setting your default delivery location. The Exchange server account was not created.
Solution
- This behavior occurs if you have run out of Outlook.ost file space. When the Outlook.ost files are created, they are named Outlookn.ost, where n is a letter from a to z. The Outlook.ost files are named in consecutive order until the Outlookz.ost file is reached. If you try to create another E-mail account after the Outlookz.ost file has been created, the E-mail account cannot be created, and you receive both the message and the error message that are listed in the "Error Message" section of this article.

You Receive an Error Message When You Use the Inbox Repair Tool to Scan a PST File

- Internal errors were found in this file. They must be repaired for this file to work correctly.
Cause
- This behavior can occur when the folder file that you are scanning is a Microsoft SharePoint Team Services folder that is synchronized with the default PST file. The Inbox Repair Tool checks for the standard Microsoft Outlook folders, including a Deleted Items folder.
  
  However, the Microsoft SharePoint Team Services PST files do not have a Deleted Items folder, so the Inbox Repair Tool returns the error message that is referenced in the "Error Message".

"Could Not Load Backappl.exe Backup Failed" Error Message Occurs When You Run the Personal Folders Backup Tool

- Specify the settings to discard the customized settings and to restore default settings.
- Before you perform this procedure, record the location of the Personal Folders file (PST) and any E-mail account information, such as server names and passwords.
- You may have to reset your accounts after you run Detect and Repair.
- To run the Detect and Repair utility, follow these steps:
  - In Outlook, on the Help menu
  - Click Detect and Repair.
  - Click to select the Restore my shortcuts check box.
  - Click to select the Discard my customized settings and restore default settings check box.
  - Click Start
  - Click Yes to restart the computer after Detect and Repair has run.
  - Start Outlook
  - Click the Outlook Today folder.

"System Resources Are Critically Low" Error Message When You Add Users to the Permissions for a Public Folder

- System resources are critically low. Close some windows.
Solution
- To work around this problem, do not add a group of users.
- Instead, add individual users to the permissions of a public folder.
- For example, add a user who has a globe next to their name.
- To do this, follow these steps:
  - Start Outlook 2003.
  - Open the public folder that you want other users to have access to.
  - Right-click the public folder
  - Click Properties.
  - On the Permissions tab
  - Click Add.
  - In the Add User dialog box
  - Click to select a user
  - Click Add.
  - Repeat the step above for each individual user who you want to give access to the public folder.
  - Click OK to close the Add User dialog box.
  - Click OK to close the Properties dialog box.

"Unable to Open the Outlook Window" When You Start Outlook

Solution
- To Delete the Registry Key.
  - Click Start
  - Click Run
  - Type regedit
  - Click OK. .
  - Navigate to the appropriate key for the version of Microsoft Windows you are using:
    - For Windows 95 or Windows 98:
    - For Windows NT:
    - Delete the Profiles key under the Windows Messaging (Subsystem) key by right-clicking Profiles
    - Clicking Delete
    - Click Yes to confirm deletion.
    - Quit the Registry Editor and restart Outlook.

"Internal Error 2744" Error Message When Starting an Office Program

- To resolve this issue, re-create the user profile. To do this, follow these steps.

  - Click Control Panel.
  - Double-click Administrative Tools
  - Double-click Computer Management.
  - Expand Local Users and Groups

  - The Microsoft Windows Messaging Subsystem (WMS) installs the MAPI core files in the C:\Windows\System32 folder. Earlier versions of Microsoft Outlook access the MAPI core files from that location. In Outlook 2003, the key MAPI core files are stored in a common location.

Solution
- Contact your ISP for help.
  - The E-mail client does not cause this behavior. From a messaging client standpoint, there are no solutions for customers whose ISPs block all SMTP Relay traffic.
    
    Most of the new SMTP E-mail gateway software permits relaying for specific IP addresses. This is how cable modem and ADSL users can continue to use their same ISP. The cable modem or ADSL provider must provide the customer a static IP address, in turn, the customer's E-mail ISP allows relaying for that specific IP address. Banks of IP addresses can also be permitted, which may provide a work around for some corporate customers who access ISPs through their corporate LAN.
    
    If the error message that is described in the "Error Message" section of this article is random, it is possible that your SMTP server is checking whether the domain or the recipient name actually exists before sending the message. If the recipient's E-mail server is temporarily down or unavailable for another reason, such as high network volume, your SMTP server cannot verify the address and may reject the relay. In this case, action is not required. The message is sent when the receiving server is available again.

- This behavior may become more common as ISPs start to take action against SPAM messages. SPAM is flooding the Internet with many copies of the same message in an attempt to send the message to people who would not otherwise choose to receive it. Most SPAM messages use an automated system to send commercial advertising, or mass marketing messages. SPAM costs the sender very little to send; most of the costs are paid for by the recipient or the E-mail providers.
  
  Some ISP's are fighting SPAM by requiring each user to be dialed directly into their system to send messages through their SMTP gateway. This is an easy way to control SPAM, but may affect some users who tunnel into their E-mail account from another ISP.
  
  MSN, the Microsoft Network, is one example of an ISP that has imposed SPAM blocking. Additionally, MSN has imposed restrictions whereby if the E-mail address in your Internet Account properties does not match that of your MSN account, you may also receive SMTP blocking errors. This affects users who receive messages with two different Internet addresses, but that want the same reply address on both E-mail accounts. Other ISP's implement similar strategies.
  
  To send or receive messages through a LAN, additional ISP or DSL and similar connection devices through MSN, the SMTP server settings must be set to secure.
  
  MSN E-mail server settings for a LAN, DSL or third-party connection must be set to secure.smtp.E-mail .msn.com.
Examples of SMTP Relay Blocking
- Employees have personal ISP accounts at isp.com where isp.com is your Service Provider's domain name. They use the company's corporate LAN to access their isp.com messages, and they don't have any problems sending or receiving. One day they start receiving SMTP blocking errors when they try to reply to messages that they have received from isp.com. They contact isp.com technical support and are told that isp.com just installed new SMTP gateway software which prevents SMTP relaying. Now the employees can receive messages through the LAN, but cannot send messages because they're not connected directly to isp.com.
- A user has two ISP accounts, one with isp.com and one with myisp.net, where isp.com and myisp.net are the Service Providers' domain names. The user dials into myisp.net and can send and receive messages from both accounts without problems. One day the user connects to myisp.net and tries to send messages through isp.com and receives blocking errors. The user connects directly to isp.com and can still send and receive messages with both accounts. In this example, isp.com implemented SMTP relay blocking and myisp.net did not.

Outlook Express Unable to Send Using Yahoo Mail

Error Messages
- You may receive one of the following error messages:
  - pop.mail.yahoo.com - Sending and Receiving' reported error (0x800CCC0F): 'The connection to the server was interrupted. If this problem continues, contact your server administrator or Internet service Provider (ISP).
  -or-
  - Sending' reported error (0x800CCC78): 'Unable to send the message. Please verify the E-mail address in your account properties. The server responded: 521 yahoo.com closing transmission channel. You must be pop-authenticated before you can use this smtp server, and you must use your yahoo mail address for the Sender/From field.
Solution
- Before a Yahoo user can send mail, Yahoo requires that the user be authenticated by the Yahoo SMTP mail server. This prevents unauthorized use of the SMTP gateway by unscrupulous or malicious mail users.
- To resolve this issue, modify some of the settings in your Yahoo mail account:
  - On the Tools menu, click E-mail Accounts.
  - If View or change existing E-mail accounts is not already selected, click View or change existing E-mail accounts, and then click Next.
  - Click the Yahoo mail account, and then click Change.
  - In the Internet E-mail Settings (POP3) dialog box, click More Settings.
  - Click to select the My outgoing server (SMTP) requires authentication check box.
  - Ensure that Log on to incoming mail server before sending mail is selected.
  - Click OK
  - Click Next
  - Click Finish.
  - Quit and restart Outlook before you send mail.
- If you still have a problem please review the following troubleshooting steps below.
  - In the fight against unsolicited commercial E-mail (spam), some internet service providers require their users to use specific SMTP servers when sending outgoing mail. If you experience problems sending E-mail , please contact your ISP to determine if specific SMTP server settings are required. You will need to use their SMTP server in place of Yahoo's SMTP server in your E-mail client
  - The following is a partial list of known ISP-required SMTP servers:
    - MSN -- smtp.E-mail .msn.com
    - NetZero -- smtp.netzero.net

Your Password Is Not Retained in Outlook Express with Windows 2000 or Windows XP

Symptoms

When you run Outlook using Microsoft Windows 2000 or Microsoft Windows XP and connect to your Internet Service Provider (ISP) to retrieve E-mail messages from a Post Office Protocol (POP) server, your password is not retained even though you have chosen to save your password.

Solution

To save your password you must back up your registry, remove the user account information, and then reenter your password.

How to Back up the Registry

Windows 2000
- Click Start
- Click Run
- In the Open box type
- Click OK.
- Locate and click the following registry key:
- On the Registry menu
- Click Save Key.
- In the File name box type a unique name for the key.
- In the Save In box
- Click a location for the file
- Click Save.
- On the Registry menu
- Click Exit.

Windows XP
- Click Start
- Click Run
- In the Open box type
- Click OK.
- Locate and click the following registry key:
- On the File menu
- Click Export.
- In the File name box type a unique name for the key.
- In the Save In box
- Click a location for the file, and then click Save.
- On the Registry menu

How to Remove the User Account Information

Windows 2000
- Quit all programs.
- Click Start
- Click Run
- In the Open box, type
- Click OK.
- Locate and click the following registry key:
- On the Security menu, click Permissions.
- Click the registry key for the user that is currently logged on and ensure that Read and Full Control are both set to Allow.
- Click the Advanced button
- Ensure that user that is currently logged on is selected, that "Full Control" is listed in the Permissions column, and that This Key and Subkeys is listed in the Apply to column.
- Click to select the Reset permissions on all child objects and enable propagation of inheritable permissions check box.
- Click Apply
- Click Yes when you receive a prompt to continue.
- Click OK
- Click OK again.
- Double-click the Protected Storage System Provider key to expand the key
- Click the user subkey folder that is directly below the Protected Storage System Provider key
- Click Delete on the Edit menu
- Click Yes in the warning message dialog box.
  - The user subkey folder looks similar to the following example:
  Note: For every identity that you have, there may be a subkey under the Protected Storage System Provider key. To resolve this issue in all of your identities, you must delete all of the user subkey folders under the Protected Storage System Provider key.
- On the Registry menu
- Click Exit
- Restart your computer.
Windows XP
- Quit all programs.
- Click Start
- Click Run
- In the Open box type
- Click OK.
- Locate and click the following registry key:
- On the Edit menu, click Permissions.
- Click the registry key for the user that is currently logged on and ensure that Read and Full Control are both set to Allow.

- Click to select the Replace permission entries on all child objects with entries shown here that apply to child objects check box.

- Click Yes when you receive a prompt to continue.

- Double-click the Protected Storage System Provider key to expand the key,
- Click the user subkey folder that is directly below the Protected Storage System Provider key
- Click Delete on the Edit menu

How to Reenter Your Password

Note: These steps work for both Windows 2000 and Windows XP.
- Click Start
- Point to Setting
- Click Control Panel.
- Double-click Mail
- Click the Mail tab.
- In the Account column
- Click to select the ISP account
- Click Properties.
- Click Server
- Type your password in the Password box
- click Remember password.
- Click OK
- Click Close.
- CloseControl Panel
- Start Outlook.
On the Tools click Send to test whether your password is retained.

- If other Windows 2000 or Windows XP users are having password retention issues, reenter the password, and then click to check the Remember Password check box for those profiles.
- Each user may need to log on for his password to be retained.

Error Message

When you attempt to start Outlook 2002 for the first time after installing Microsoft Office XP to a path other than the default, Outlook may not start, and the following error message may appear:

You cannot create a new database for Business Contact Manager when you start Outlook 2003

Error

When you start Microsoft Office Outlook 2003, and then click Yes to set up Outlook 2003 to use Business Contact Manager, you cannot create a new database for Business Contact Manager.

Solution #1

To resolve this behavior, have your network administrator add you as a member to the BCMUsers group.

When you click OK, the Microsoft Exchange client opens, but any attempt to access your mailbox results in the same error message.
The offline folder file (.OST) must be fully synchronized with the computer running Microsoft Exchange Server in online mode before it can be used offline.

Cause

This occurs when you use the Inbox Setup Wizard to create a profile and answer Yes to the Microsoft Exchange Server service question "Do you travel with this computer?" The result is that a default offline folder file is created in the system directory (that is, C:\WINDOWS\ EXCHANGE.OST for Windows or SYSTEM FOLDER, PREFERENCES, EXCHANGE PROFILES, OFFLINE FOLDERS for Macintosh operating systems) and the option "Choose the connection type when starting" is selected.
When you start the Microsoft Exchange client using this profile, you are presented with the choice to connect or work offline. If you choose to work offline, and you have not yet synchronized the .OST file, the error message appears.

Solution

Start the Microsoft Exchange client using this profile and connect in online mode to the computer running Microsoft Exchange Server by one of the following methods:

On the Tools menu, click Synchronize and click All Folders. Allow the synchronization of all folders to complete before proceeding.
Exit and log off and restart the Microsoft Exchange client in offline mode.
