Nothing Happens When You Click on System Restore or Help
• You must have your PC set to show all files and folders.
  • On the Tools menu in Windows Explorer, click Folder Options.
  • Click the View tab.
  • Under Hidden files and folders, click Show hidden files and folders.
  • Note: To access Windows Explorer, click Start, point to All Programs, and then click Windows Explorer.
• Then do a search for
  pchealth.inf
  Once you find it right click on the file name and click install.
  • Have your CD ready for you will need it.

Clean a virus in the _RESTORE folder. (System Restore Files)

• Windows Millennium Edition (ME) and Windows XP have a feature known as System Restore, which creates backups of certain files in the _Restore folder. The System Restore feature usually backs up files with EXE or COM extensions, which may include infected files and malware programs. Files in the _Restore folder are protected and can only be accessed using System Restore. Therefore you have to disable System Restore in order for the virus program to scan them.
• The following procedure disables the System Restore feature:
  
  
• For Windows ME
  
  • Right-click the My Computer icon on the Desktop and click Properties.
  • Click the Performance tab.
  • Click the File System button.
  • Click the Troubleshooting tab.
  • Select Disable System Restore.
  • Click Apply
  • Close
  • Close
  • When prompted to restart, click Yes.
  • Press F8 while the system restarts.
  • Choose Safe Mode then hit the Enter key.
  • After your system has restarted, continue with the scan/clean process. Files under the _Restore folder can now be deleted or scanned.
  • Re-enable System Restore by clearing Disable System Restore and restarting your system normally.
    
    
  For Windows XP
  
  • Log on as Administrator.
  • Right-click the My Computer icon on the desktop and click Properties.
  • Click the System Restore tab.
  • Select Turn off System Restore.
  • Click Apply
  • Yes

  • Continue with the scan/clean process.
  • Files under the _Restore folder can now be deleted or scanned.
  • Re-enable System Restore by clearing Turn off System Restore.

What is System Restore?
• System Restore in XP allows you to restore to an earlier date rather than reinstall.
• System Restore will restore to a previous date without changing personal data files such as documents, e-mails and other personal files.
• System Restore monitors your PC for changes and stores them on a different partition so you can safely go back to a certain date. You don't have to take snapshots for it to work.
• It creates Restore Points that you can use to go back to a previous time.
  These Points are created when significant system changes have been made.
• You can also create your own Restore Points and name them.

How to restore
• Method #1
  • Reboot into safe mode by pressing F8 during the post screen
  • Select the option "Last known good configuration" and press Enter.
  • The problem when using this method is you won't have the option to choose a restore point

  • Boot into basic safe mode

  • Now you can restore your computer based on a calendar of actual restore points that were created

Start The System Restore Tool At A Command Prompt
Restart your computer pressing the F8 during the initial startup to start your computer in Safe Mode with a command prompt.

Enable / disable System Restore

• Take the tic out of the box to enable System Restore monitoring on the system. Click OK

Disable System Restore from monitoring a drive
• Open Control Panel
• Double click System icon.
• Click on the System Restore tab on the system applet.
• Click on the drive you want to stop System Restore from monitoring.
• Click the settings option. Put a tic in box for turn off system restore on this drive. You cannot disable System Restore on the whole system to stop it from monitoring the system drive.

Delete System Restore Points

System Restore Errors
System Restore Stalls or Weird Things Happen When You Try To Open It.
• Most likely you have a virus in the System Restore files
• Disable System Restore and do a virus scan and include these files in the scan.

Error "System Restore Was Unable To Start Due To A Missing Framedyn.dll".
• Copy the framedyn.dll file from the \windows\system32\wbem directory to the \windows\system32 directory.

System Restore Does Not Create Automatic System Checkpoints
• System Restore requires the Task Scheduler to be enabled
• System Restore requires that nothing be running in the back ground
  CTRL/ALT/DEL and End Task on all programs running.
• Make sure you are leaving the machine alone long enough for it to restore.

System Restore "Restore Points" Are Missing or Deleted
• It is important to note that if you have a multiple-partition computer with a drive with little free space on it, this drive could cause System Restore to hang all across the system and delete restore points. However, this only happens if you have reached the minimum amount of disk space that is allowed and perform operations to monitored file types such as upgrading, UN-installing or installing programs, moving, deleting or renaming files, and so on. If you are very low on disk space, but only perform operations to non-monitored files, this does not cause System Restore to hang.
  • When you manually turn System Restore off:
    • If you manually turn System Restore off on the system drive, this causes all restore points to be purged, and you receive the following warning message:
      • You have chosen to turn off System Restore. If you continue, all existing restore points will be deleted, and you will not be able to track and undo changes to your computer. Do you want to turn off System Restore?
        • Yes-No
    • If you manually turn System Restore off on any non-system drive, all restore points on that specific drive are purged, and you receive the following warning message:
      • You have chosen to turn off System Restore on this drive. If you continue, you will not be able to track or undo harmful changes on this drive. Do you want to turn off System Restore on this drive?
        • Yes-No
  • When you turn System Restore back on (on the system drive), it immediately creates a System Checkpoint. When you turn System Restore back on (on a non-system drive), it does not immediately create a restore point on that drive, but monitoring resumes immediately on the drive.
  • When you upgrade from one operating system to another or you reinstall the operating system. Note that the upgrade could be from Microsoft Windows Millennium Edition (Me) to Windows XP or Windows XP to Windows XP.
    
  • After setup is complete, you will have to first run System Checkpoint, but the restore points you had under the previous operating system are gone. Windows does not allow you to roll back to an older version of the operating system by using System Restore.
    
  • It is important to note that when you upgrade, you might still see some restore point files and folders in the (drive letter): \System Volume Information on Windows XP or under (System DriveLetter): \_RESTORE folder on Windows Me. However, these restore points are obsolete and cannot be used as they do not appear on the Select a Restore Point list on the System Restore page.
    
  • If you start the Disk Cleanup utility and click the Disk Cleanup tab, a System Restore: Obsolete Data Stores entry is available. These are files that were created before reformatting or reinstalling Windows, and they are obsolete and you can safely delete them. If you choose to cleanup and delete these files, you will no longer see them under the folders that are mentioned earlier in this article, and the option to delete obsolete data stores no longer appears on the Disk Cleanup utility.
    
  • When you start the Disk Cleanup utility, click the More Options tab, and then click Clean up under System Restore, all restore points (except the most recent one) are purged.
  • When you are running low on disk space (but not to the point of causing the tool to hang), System Restore purges some of the restore points, but not all of them. This happens because regardless of how much disk space you have, when the data store reaches approximately 90 percent of its maximum size (the default size or the user setting), System Restore uses a First In First Out (FIFO) process to decrease the size of the data store to approximately 75 percent of its maximum size.
  • When a restore point reaches an age of 90 days (the default time to live), it is purged.
  • When you manually reduce the data store size. This effectively triggers the FIFO process of some restore points to accommodate the newly resized data store.

• After you finish the preceding steps, you can use the System Restore tool. However, when you use the System Restore tool to restore an earlier configuration, the registry fix is removed from the Windows registry. To make sure that the problem does not occur again after you restore the earlier configuration, repeat the preceding steps to fix the System Restore tool, create a new System Restore point, and label it to indicate that it contains the System Restore fix. After you do this, you can use the System Restore tool at any time to restore the System Restore point that contains the fix without damaging the System Restore tool.

Cannot Start A Remote Assistance Session After You Use System Restore
• To work around this behavior, use either of the following methods: "
  • Use Remote Assistance to create another ticket and send this new ticket to the Expert."
  • Use System Restore to undo the restoration.

XP Is Asking Me To Generate A Cab file For System Restore
• To generate a system restore Cab file please use the following procedure:
  • Click Start
  • Click Run
  • Type or paste the following:
    %windir%\system32\restore\srdiag.exe
  • Press Enter or click OK.
  • A CMD window will open while the Srdiag.exe runs.
  • The CMD session will automatically close when complete, and the .CAB file will be created as desired in your 'Windows\system32\restore' directory
  • This could take a couple of minutes.

System Restore Errors
• To check the event logs for System Restore related errors:
  • Click Start
  • Click Control Panel
  • Click "Performance and Maintenance".
  • Click Administrative Tools
  • Click Computer Management
  • Double-click Event Viewer
  • Click System.
  • Click the Source tab to sort by name
  • Look for "sr" or "srservice"
  • Double-click each of these services
  • Evaluate the event description for any indication of the cause of the problem.

Create an Automated System Recovery set using Backup
• Important You will need a blank floppy disk to save your system settings and media to contain the backup files.
• Click Start
• Point to All Programs
• Point to Accessories
• Point to System Tools
• Click Backup
  • The Backup Utility Wizard starts by default unless it is disabled.
• Click the Advanced Mode button in the Backup Utility Wizard as shown below.
  
  
  
  
• On the Tools menu
• Click ASR Wizard
• All you have to do is follow the instructions that appear on your screen.
• Note Only those system files necessary for starting up your system will be backed up by this procedure.

ASR Restore
• To access the restore portion press F2 when prompted in the text-mode portion of setup.
• ASR will read the disk configurations from the file that it creates and will restores
  • All of the disk signatures
  • Volumes and partitions on the disks required to start the computer.
    • It will attempt to restore all of the disk configurations, but under some circumstances, it might not be able to
• ASR will then install a simple installation of Windows
• It will then automatically start a restoration using the backup created by the ASR wizard as shown above.

Recovering from a system failure using Automated System Recovery
• You will need the following items
  • Your previously created Automated System Recovery (ASR) floppy disk.
  • Your previously created backup media.
  • The original operating system installation CD.
• Insert the original operating system installation CD into your CD drive.
• Restart your computer. If prompted to press a key in order to start the computer from CD, press the appropriate key.
• Press F2 when prompted during the text-only mode section of Setup. You will be prompted to insert the ASR floppy disk you have previously created.
• Follow the directions on the screen.
• Note ASR will not restore your data files.

Using the Recovery Actions if Windows Stops Unexpectedly
• Using Startup and Recovery in the Control Panel, you can configure Windows to do the following when a severe error (called a Stop error or Fatal system error) occurs:
  • Write an event to the system log.
  • Alert administrators.
  • Dump system memory to a file that advanced users can use for debugging.
  • Automatically restart the computer.
• Note
  • The Memory.dmp log file can use for tracing the cause of the Stop error. If you contact technical support about the error, they might ask for the log file.
  • Each time this happens Windows writes to the same log so it might be advised to rename the log each time after windows starts so you will not overwrite it and loose information that could be helpful in finding a solution.

How to Gain Access to the System Volume Information Folder
What is the System Volume Information Folder?
• The System Volume Information folder is a hidden, system folder that the System Restore tool uses to store its information and restore points. There is a System Volume Information folder on every partition on your computer.
Windows XP Professional or Windows XP Home Edition Using the FAT32 File System
• Click Start
• Click My Computer
• Click On the Tools menu
• Click Folder Options
• On the View tab
• Click Show hidden files and folders
• Clear the Hide protected operating system files (Recommended) check box.
• Click Yes when you are prompted to confirm the change
• Click OK
• Double-click the System Volume Information folder in the root folder to open it
Windows XP Professional Using the NTFS File System on a Domain
• Click Start
• Click My Computer
• On the Tools menu
• Click Folder Options
• On the View tab
• Click Show hidden files and folders
• Clear the Hide protected operating system files (Recommended) check box.
• Click Yes when you are prompted to confirm the change
• Click OK
• Right-click the System Volume Information folder in the root folder
• Click Sharing and Security
• Click the Security tab
• Click Add, and then type the name of the user to whom you want to give access to the folder. Choose the account location if appropriate (either local or from the domain). Typically, this is the account with which you are logged on.
• Click OK
• Click OK
• Double-click the System Volume Information folder in the root folder to open it.
Windows XP Professional using the NTFS File System on a Workgroup or Standalone Computer
• Click Start
• Click My Computer
• On the Tools menu
• Click Folder Options
• On the View tab
• Click Show hidden files and folders
• Clear the Hide protected operating system files (Recommended) check box.
• Click Yes when you are prompted to confirm the change.
• Clear the Use simple file sharing (Recommended) check box.
• Click OK
• Right-click the System Volume Information folder in the root folder, and then click Properties
• Click the Security tab.
• Click Add, and then type the name of the user to whom you want to give access to the folder. Typically, this is the account with which you are logged on
• Click OK
• Click OK
• Double-click the System Volume Information folder in the root folder to open it.
• Note: The System Volume Information folder is now accessible in normal mode to users of Windows XP Home Edition.
Using CACLS with Windows XP Home Edition Using the NTFS File System In Windows XP Home Edition with the NTFS file system, you can also use the Cacls tool, which is a command-line tool, to display or modify file or folder access control lists (ACLs). For more information about the Cacls tool, including usage and switches, search the Help and Support Center for "cacls."
• Click Start
• Click Run
• Type in
  cmd
• Click OK
• Make sure that you are in the root folder of the partition for which you want to gain access to the System Volume Information folder. For example, to gain access the C:\System Volume Information folder, make sure that you are in the root folder of drive C (at a "C:\" prompt).
• Type the following line, and then press Enter
  cacls "driveletter:\System Volume Information" /E /G username:F
• Make sure to type the quotation marks as indicated. This command adds the specified user to the folder with Full Control permissions.
• Double-click the System Volume Information folder in the root folder to open it.
• If you need to remove the permissions after troubleshooting, type the following line at a command prompt:
  cacls "driveletter:\System Volume Information" /E /R username
This command removes all permissions for the specified user. The following steps also work if you restart the computer to Safe mode because simple file sharing is automatically turned off when you run the computer in Safe mode.
• Open My Computer, right-click the System Volume Information folder
• Click Properties
• Click the Security tab.
• Click Add, and then type the name of the user to whom you want to give access to the folder. Typically, this is the account with which you are logged on.
• Click OK
• Click OK
• Double-click the System Volume Information folder to open it.

The System Restore Service Does Not Work Correctly
Errors
• You may experience one or more of the following issues in the System Restore service: "
  • In System Properties, the System Restore tab is not present.
  • Note To view System Properties, right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.
  • In Services, the System Restore service is listed as stopped.
• If you try to manually start the System Restore service, you may receive the following error message:
  FOLDER IS NOT EMPTY
• Note By default, the System Volume Information folder (drive:\System Volume Information) is hidden.
Solution
• To resolve this issue, rename the System Volume Information folder, and then restart your computer. If you have more than one hard disk drive on your computer, follow these steps on one hard disk drive at a time. To rename the System Volume Information folder, follow these steps:
  1. Configure the View hidden files and folders setting in Folder Options if it is not configured. To do this, follow these steps:
     • Right-click Start.
     • Click Explore
     • Click Tools
     • Click Folder Options
     • Click the View tab
     • In the Advanced settings box, click Show hidden files and folders
     • Click OK
  2. Locate the root of a hard disk drive. Work in reverse alphabetical order by drive letter.
  3. For example, if you have three hard drives on your computer with the drive letters "C", "E", and "F", follow these steps on drive F, on drive E, and then on drive C.
  4. Right-click the System Volume Information folder, and then click Rename
  5. Type a new similar name for the folder, and then press Enter.
  6. For example, type System Volume Information2, and then press Enter
  7. Restart your computer, and then test to determine if the issue is resolved
  8. If the issue is not resolved, repeat steps 2-5 for the next drive on your computer in reverse alphabetical order by drive letter.

System Restore Has Been Turned Off By Group Policy. To Turn Back On, Contact Domain Administrator
• Method 1
  • Go to Start
  • Click Run
  • Type in
    gpedit.msc
  • Press the Enter key
  • Under Computer Configuration, expand Administrative Templates, expand System
  • Click on the System Restore folder
  • In the right-hand pane, double-click on Turn off Configuration under the Setting tab
  • Click in the radio button beside Not Configured
  • Click on Apply
  • Click OK
  Method 2
  • Open Registry Editor and navigate to:
    HKEY LOCAL MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows NT\SystemRestore
  • In the right-pane, delete the value "DisableConfig"
  • Close Registry Editor
  • Close and reopen the System Restore properties page

  • Rstrui.exe is what loads your Restore points . Read this & see if you have it set up correctly.
    • In My Computer
    • Click the Tools menu
    • Click Folder Options
    • On the View tab, make sure to check the option "Hide extensions for known file types"
    • Click OK
    • Click the Start menu
    • Click Run
    • Type in the Open Field
      %windir%\inf
    • Click OK
    • Locate and select the file sr.inf Right-click it and click Install

Disable the System Restore Group Policy
Note You must be an administrator or owner, or have administrative privileges to perform these tasks. Solution
• Method 1: Use Group Policy Editor
  • Click Start
  • Click Run
  • Type in
    gpedit.msc
  • Click OK
  • Expand Computer Configuration
  • Expand Administrative Templates
  • Expand System
  • Click System Restore
  • Double-click Turn off System Restore
  • On the Setting tab, select Enable.
  • Double-click Turn off Configuration
  • On the Setting tab, select Enable.
    • For more information about what these settings do, click the Explain tab on the Properties dialog box.
  • Click Apply
  • Click OK.
  • If users try to access System Restore Configuration, the System Properties dialog box is present, but the System Restore tab is not present.
• Method 2: Create a Customized Microsoft Management Console
  • Click Start
  • Click Run
  • Type in
    mmc
  • Click OK
  • In Microsoft Management Console (MMC), on the Console menu, click Add/Remove Snap-in
  • On the Standalone tab
  • Click Add
  • Click Group Policy under Available Standalone Snap-ins
  • Click Add
  • Accept the default of Local Computer in the Group Policy Object box
  • Click Finish
  • Close the Add Standalone Snap-in dialog box
  • Click OK on the Add/Remove Snap-in dialog box.
  • Under Console Root
  • Expand Local Computer Policy
  • Expand Computer Configuration
  • Expand Administrative Templates
  • Expand System
  • Click System Restore
  • Double-click Turn off System Restore
  • On the Setting tab
  • Select Enable
  • Double-click Turn off Configuration
  • On the Setting tab
  • Select Enable
  • Click Apply
  • Click OK
  • On the Console menu, click Save as
  • Type the name of the new console
  • Accept the Administrative Tools folder as the default location in which to save this file.
  • To access the new console
  • Click Start
  • Click More Programs
  • Click Administrative Tools
  • If users try to access System Restore Configuration, the System Properties dialog box is present, but the System Restore tab is not present.
• Method 3: Use Registry Editor to Disable System Restore
  • Click Start
  • Click Run
  • Type in
    regedit
  • Click OK
  • In Registry Editor, locate the following registry key:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows NT
  • Under Windows NT, create a new key:
    • On the Edit menu
    • Click New
    • Click Key
    • For the name of the new key, type
      SystemRestore
  • Create a new DWORD value:
    • On the Edit menu, click New
    • Click DWORD value
    • Double-click the new key to open the Edit DWORD Value dialog box
    • Under Value name, type
      DisableConfig
    • Under Value data, type 1
    • Click OK
